What in the World is Going On?

Do you get the feeling that something sinister is afoot? Do you question the rapidity of moral decline, the acceptance of prevarication, the legalization of perversion and the disdain for Christianity? Are you concerned about the economy, the intrusion of government into our lives, legislation from the bench and a general erosion of our Constitution? 

Are you alarmed by what is happening in our churches? Do you buy-in to the un-Scriptural prosperity gospel? Have you heard teachings adhering to what is termed open theism? Have the sermons from the pulpit become so watered down with feel-good “how to better your life” messages? Has repentance been re-labeled as merely deciding to turn around and move your life in a different direction? Do you notice attendance dropping, especially among men? Is your church accepting those living a lifestyle that is in opposition to Scripture?

Does it just seem like the world, and for our purposes, America, is going to hell in a hand basket? Do you ever ask yourself, “What in the world is going on?” You are not alone. Your fears and concerns are supportable by statistics. The evidence paints a picture of cultures - all cultures - in crisis. The earth itself is speaking out with natural disaster after disaster. 

There is something going on. It is the rapid movement to the end of all we know by look, touch or taste. If we are the Lord’s children, washed in the blood of Christ, we need not fear. We are approaching the Day of the Lord, when He will make all things right. This does not mean troubles are not ahead - they are. Our strength, however, is not of ourselves, it is from Him. Scripture tells us what is coming, and there are many that do. These speak to our question. It has all been prophesied.

Ezekiel 39:21 "I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I lay upon them.”

Daniel 12:1 “At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book.”

Isaiah 27:11b “For this is a people without discernment; therefore he who made them will not have compassion on them; he who formed them will show them no favor.”

Matthew 24:3-8 ‘And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? And Jesus answered and said unto them, “Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.”’

We should take the words of our Lord to heart. We are witnessing the “beginning of sorrows.” How long will it be from this beginning to God’s glorious end? That is one of His mysteries. He alone knows, but He has given us signs. Those signs say we are coming to a cosmic climax, and the time of it grows nearer every day. This is “what in the world is going on?” Take heart and keep watching the signs.
